GodMen: How to be a Manly Christian
Saturday, April 05, 2008 |
Thanks to IndieFaith (who rightly labeled this under 'idiocy') for this video . I used to think the Iron Sharpens Iron Conference was bad, but this sounds like it's trying to reframe Promise Keepers in the low-brow morning talk radio world. And what a fun world that is! (dripping sarcasm)

If I happened to be gay, I would think that's the best conference ever. But they probably don't really dig the company of men who are out and proud... Quite the homo-erotic Jesus fest...!

Actually at the last two of these they had a guy who came out of the homosexual life style. So you might actually want to investigate the people before you try and slam them.

You know I am not sure what the bloggers such as yourself feel the need to attack ministries that are meeting needs. Just cause you dont agree with it, doesnt mean that God doesnt agree with it.
Funny to me that all the talk about tolerance ends when it is about Christianity and anything masculine.

I will be posting further from a paper that began out of an interest in this area (the first two posts are up here and here, with more posts relevant to this issue to follow). I am not interested in bashing masculinity I am interested in dismantling expressions that foreclose the divine space between feminine and masculine (within individuals, among men, and between genders). The feminist movement seemed to be able to integrate typically masculine attributes into their self-understanding. In some apparent threat these men who are forming these expressions feel the need to be even more manly in order to compensate as opposed to integrate a healthy space for femininity.
At one point I was trying to give these expressions more of chance but as was doing my research I could not in any form agree with the role they were giving to 'masculinity'.
Perhaps, fighting preaching, we will just disagree. That is if you agree with a person such as Leon Podles, who seems to be spokesperson broadly for this expression (see Podles article here).

Fightingpreacher,
In short, I think the real flaw with such conferences (yes, I'm generalizing) is the fact that the Gospel of Jesus Christ gets substituted for the Gospel of Hyper-Masculinity. I'm fine with guys getting together to discuss what it means to be a Christian man in today's world, but I believe the emphasis has to be on first identifying ourselves as Christian. What ends up happening is that we decide first what it means to be a male, and then try to figure out our Christianity second. That's totally ass-backwards to me, as one who calls Christ Lord.
The fact is that most of what is defined as masculine is purely cultural, and that sets the agenda for how we read Scripture, as well as how we engage the world (attack anything that sounds anti-masculine).
I tolerate people insofar as I try to listen charitably, but my tolerance ends when I see bad theology. I view Jesus overturning the moneychanger's tables in the Temple as challenging our notions of free tolerance in a liberal society today, because any ideology that would hinder the Gospel of Jesus Christ should not be tolerated - least of all among Christians. Masculinity is a case in point.

Movements based on reactions are just that...... reactions. They don't have some inherent corner on the Truth. Even if they have the name God in them and use God's Word... and even if seemingly 'good" things happen. Ever heard of a Christian cult? Read the papers lately...ever heard of the FLDS?? Discernment needs to run a little deeper.
Someone needs to tell that dude on the video that HIS truth is not necessarily THE Truth and unless he has some "direct line" to God that other followers of Jesus somehow lack... he better be careful where he goes with his "logic."
and ....to Mr Fighting Preacher.... someone coming "out" of a gay lifestyle doesn't prove the validity of the "ministry" either.
Yes indeed...Lord have mercy!!
